North Carolina Real Estate State Requirements

The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.

We recommend you contact the Real Estate Commission for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred.

Provisional Broker Licenses:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a United States citizen, a non-citizen national, or a qualified alien under federal law
  • Have a social security number
  • Complete the 75 hour NC Broker Prelicense course
  • Pass the real estate license examination
  • Satisfy the Commission that they posses the requisite character to be entitled to licensure
  • Submit the application and associated fees

Provisional Broker Postlicense requirements:

  • Provisional Brokers licensed on or after April 1, 2006, must complete 90 hours of post licensing education in the first 3 years after initial licensure (minimum of 1 30 hour post license course each year by the anniversary date of your initial license issuance
  • The three post licensing courses are: Broker Relationships and Responsibilities, Contracts and Closing, and Selected Topics
  • Once all courses have been completed and reported by the school, the provisional status will be terminated
  • No CE credit will be accredited for a postlicense course. Licensees must complete the required CE courses prior to the second renewal of license

Note: Effective April 1, 2006, the Commission discontinued issuing real estate salesperson licenses. At this time, all salesperson licensees were converted to broker licenses and each person holding a broker licenses that was changed from salesperson to broker on that date was classified as a provisional broker. Provisional brokers must have completed a 24 hour broker transition course no later than April 1, 2008 OR showed proof of possessing 4 years of full time real estate brokerage experience or equivalent part time real estate brokerage experience within the previous 6 years. If provisional brokers met this requirement by April 1, 2008, the provisional status of the license will be terminated and the broker will not be required to complete the 90 hour broker post licensing course. If the provisional broker fails to satisfy this requirement by April 1, 2008, the license will be placed on inactive status and the licensee must complete the 90 hour broker post license course in order to activate the license and terminate the provisional status.

Continuing Education Requirements:

  • Complete 8 hours every year.
  • 4 hours of CE must include the mandatory update course provided by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission
  • The other 4 hours are elective courses
  • All Brokers-in-Charge must complete a 4 hour Broker-in-Charge Annual Review Course each full license period after being designated a broker-in-charge
  • Sales agents must renew on June 30th every year, and all Continuing Education for distance education courses must be completed by June 10th.
