Ohio Real Estate State Requirements

The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education requirements established by the Ohio Real Estate Commission. The information provided below can be found on the Division’s website:http://www.com.state.oh.us/real/.

However, we recommend you contact the Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred.

Salesperson License

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must Be honest, truthful and of good reputation
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime of mural turpitude
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Must complete the required educational courses which are:
    • Real Estate Principles and Practice (40 hours)
    • Ohio Real Estate Law (including instruction in civil rights, housing discrimination, and desegregation problems) (40 hours)
    • Real Estate Appraisal (20 hours)
    • Real Estate Finance (20 hours)
  • Pass the State examination
  • Submit application and associated fees

Salesperson Postlicense Education

  • All new Salesperson must complete the 10 hour Postlicense Course within one year of the date the license was issued

Broker License

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must Be honest, truthful and of good reputation
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime of mural turpitude
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Must complete the required educational courses. The courses taken are based on when the applicant was licensed as a Salesperson. To find out more info, visit the Division's website. However, below are the education requirements if licensed on or after August 1, 2001:
    • Real Estate Principles and Practice (40 hours)
    • Ohio Real Estate Law (including instruction in civil rights, housing discrimination, and desegregation problems) (40 hours)
    • Real Estate Appraisal (20 hours)
    • Real Estate Finance (20 hours)
    • Financial Management (20 hours)
    • Human Resource or Personnel Management (30 hours)
    • Applied Business Economics (30 hours)
    • Business Law (30 hours)
    • Must have a minimum of two years of college
  • Must have been licensed for at least 2 years and have worked as a Salesperson of an average of 30 hours per week for two of the last 5 years immediately preceding submitting the application
  • Must have completed 20 real estate transactions or have such equivalent experience
  • Pass the State examination
  • Submit application and associated fees

Continuing Education

  • Licensees must submit proof of completing 30 hours of continuing education every three years due on or before the licensee’s date of birth
  • For every three- year reporting period, licensees must complete nine hours of mandatory continuing education coursework to include:
    • 3 hours in Civil Rights
    • 3 hours in Core Law
    • 3 hours in Cannons of Ethics
  • For every three-year reporting period, licensees must complete 21 hours of elective continuing education coursework
  • Prelicense and Postlicense education may not be used for CE
  • You may receive credit for completing duplicate hours during your 3 year renewal cycle
