The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the South Dakota Real Estate Commission.

Associate Broker
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be competent to transact the business of a licensee in a manner as to safeguard the interest of the public
- Show proof of citizenship
- Complete 60 hours of Course I (Principles and Practices of Real Estate) and 40 hours of Course II (Broker-level)
- Pass the state examination with a 75%
- Submit an application and associated fees
Broker
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be competent to transact the business of a licensee in a manner as to safeguard the interest of the public
- Show proof of citizenship
- Complete 60 hours of Course I (Principles and Practices of Real Estate) and 40 hours of Course II (Broker-level), 15 hour of Broker Course III
- Have 2 years of active status
- Pass the state examination with a 75%
- Submit an application and associated fees
Continuing Education
- Must complete 24 hours of education within the two year renewal cycle
- at least 12 hours must cover any of the following topics:
- Real Estate Contracts
- Real Estate License Law
- Fair Housing
- Ethics
- Environmental Issues
- Antitrust
- the American with Disabilities Act
- Brokerage Services
- or any combination of these subjects
- The other 12 hours are elective courses
- Sales agents renew every two years from the date their license was received.
